Contemporary Trends in the In-Service Training of Middle School Teachers: An Analytical and Applied Approach

Abstract

This study seeks to shed light on the most prominent contemporary trends in the in-service training of middle-school teachers, through an analytical reading of their theoretical foundations and philosophical underpinnings. It adopts a descriptive-analytical method grounded in the analysis of relevant educational literature, linking theoretical frameworks to the reality of the training system in Algeria. The study finds that competency-based training represents an extension of an authentic pedagogical heritage, that the individual model emphasises personal differences, and that the skills-based orientation focuses on breaking teaching down into procedural components. The functional model, in turn, corrects the reductionism found in earlier orientations by introducing an ethical dimension. Micro-teaching emerges as a practical training tool, while the systems approach offers a comprehensive framework that has been adopted by the Algerian educational system. The study concludes that these trends are complementary rather than contradictory, and that deploying them jointly serves the development of teacher performance.
