Abstract

The aim of the research is to study the transformation in the domain of education in the Islamic West during the medieval period and compare such education to modern distance education. The study is based on both historical and analytical methods utilizing Ibn Sahnun and Ibn Khaldun. The results suggest that traditional education is marked by several principles, such as progressive instruction, importance of memory techniques, and elaboration of the role of the teacher, that allow developing both intellect and the whole society. Unlike traditional education, distance education relies on modern technologies and allows making learning process flexible and accessible.
