Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive inquiry into the diverse sources that illuminate the economic history of India from the medieval period through the modern era. By systematically examining archival records, administrative documents, travelers’ accounts, commercial records, coinage, and colonial-era statistical data, the research seeks to reconstruct the trajectories of trade, agriculture, taxation, and industrial activity across centuries. The study emphasizes the methodological challenges in interpreting historical economic data, including gaps in records, regional variations, and biases in colonial documentation. It further explores the comparative utility of qualitative narratives and quantitative evidence in understanding economic transformations, such as shifts in agrarian practices, market networks, and the emergence of modern industrial sectors. The inquiry demonstrates how integrating multiple sources provides a nuanced and contextualized understanding of India’s economic evolution, highlighting continuities and disruptions across political regimes. By offering a synthesis of primary and secondary sources, this work contributes to the broader discourse on historical economic analysis and serves as a reference for future research in South Asian economic history. This study provides a thorough investigation into the diverse sources that illuminate the economic history of medieval and modern India. By examining a wide array of primary and secondary sources including historical texts, archaeological findings, economic literature, and archival records, the research aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the economic dynamics shaping Indian society across different epochs. Through meticulous analysis and synthesis of these sources, the study seeks to uncover the underlying socio-economic factors, trade patterns, agrarian systems, and technological advancements that influenced India's economic trajectory over centuries. By shedding light on the richness and complexity of India's economic past, this inquiry contributes to a deeper appreciation of its historical development and contemporary economic challenges.
